Cognitive Improvements Through Hearing Aid Use

Cognitive Improvements Through Hearing Aid Use
The impact of hearing loss extends far beyond simply having difficulties with hearing. Not only does hearing loss make capturing the sounds around you difficult, but it also can impact your brain health, leading to cognitive decline.

However, you don’t have to accept cognitive decline if you have hearing loss. Instead, research has begun to show that using hearing aids can not only help prevent this decline, but it can also assist in improving cognition!

Research Shows Hearing Aids Help Brain Health

While the common perception of hearing aids is that they are made to help improve your hearing, these devices can provide even more than that. In a newly-published study, researchers followed a group of hearing-impaired seniors for eighteen months. Cognitive tests were taken at the start of the study to establish a baseline, then the participants had hearing evaluations and were fitted for hearing aids.

After eighteen months, these participants were re-tested. On average, the study participants wore their hearing aids between 60% to 90% of their waking hours. With this level of hearing aid use, the participants reported improvements in their listening ability and speech comprehension. Also, their cognitive tests showed improvements in cognitive executive function, particularly in those who wore their hearing aids for 90% of the time.

Also, cognitive health doesn’t exist in a vacuum. Your overall quality of life can have a significant impact on your brain health. For example, individuals who struggle with untreated hearing loss will isolate themselves as they are uncomfortable socializing when they cannot hear well.

But, as these individuals have less socialization, feelings of isolation, depression, and anxiety are common. Yet, another study pointed out that those who used their hearing aids for at least 8 hours a day had an increased quality of life, which ultimately helps protect your cognitive health.

However, something to keep in mind is that simply using hearing aids is not always enough to protect your brain. For the best protection, you need precisely programmed and fitted hearing aids.

Hearing Aid Fit And Programming Critical For Effectiveness

For the right fit and programming when it comes to hearing aids, you need educated and experienced hearing health care providers. Here at Hearing & Balance Doctors, our doctors of audiology provide a high level of care and have the tools to help ensure that your hearing aids work for your needs.

For instance, a common issue individuals have with their hearing aids is discomfort. Maybe their hearing aid earmolds were improperly created? Or maybe there is an issue with the programming, leaving the wearer either still straining to hear people or the sensitivity is too high, making the hearing aids painfully loud.

Our doctors of audiology perform extensive hearing evaluations to help ensure that they understand your hearing needs. They also provide a wide range of hearing aids to choose from and help you find hearing aids that fit your lifestyle, needs, and budget. And, once your new hearing aids arrive, our audiologists use real-ear measurement to ensure that your hearing devices are properly programmed to your precise needs.

Not all hearing aid providers can offer the level of care and expertise that our doctors of audiology can, so if you want the best hearing aid experience, then you need Hearing & Balance Doctors.
