Better Hearing & Speech Month 2020

Better Hearing & Speech Month
Issues with the auditory system can impact more than just your hearing. That’s why many auditory services include an assessment of both your hearing and your speech. When your hearing is affected, it can impact your ability to both hear and comprehend what is being said.

Awareness of the connection between speech and hearing, as well as overall awareness of these issues, is part of why May is Better Hearing and Speech Month for 2020. That’s why here at Hearing & Balance Doctors, we want to do our part and raise awareness of these issues.

May Is Better Hearing & Speech Month

So, why dedicate a whole month to better hearing and speech? Well, for one thing, this month is dedicated to raising awareness of the impact of communication disorders. Issues like depression, workplace disruption, social isolation, and even dementia, are connected to communication disorders, particularly hearing loss.

For another thing, this month helps raise awareness of treatment options available for those struggling with hearing and speech issues. With the right treatments, those individuals who have trouble with hearing, speech, or comprehension of speech can enjoy an improved quality of life.

Also, with COVID-19 creating more difficulties with regular communication, it is even more important that individuals be aware of the hearing and speech treatment options, and how loved ones can be supported.

How To Participate In Better Hearing & Speech Month

There are a number of ways you can participate in Better Hearing and Speech Month, whether you have hearing and speech issues, have a loved one who is struggling, or you just want to be involved.

  • Educate yourself and others – One of the main points of having a dedicated month to raising awareness of speech and hearing issues is to have people educate themselves on these issues. The American Speech-Language-Hearing Association has created educational resources you can use as well as share with others.
  • Have your hearing assessed – Hearing loss is generally a slow process, and it can be difficult to notice the loss in early stages. However, the sooner your hearing loss is diagnosed, the less of an impact it will have on your ability to communicate and understand speech. It is recommended that those who are in their late forties and early fifties start coming in once a year for a diagnostic hearing evaluation. That way, any changes can be quickly identified and addressed.
  • Bring your hearing aids in for service – Once you have hearing aids, it is essential that you keep up with regular care. Much of the care relates to cleaning, which our doctors of audiology will go over with you when you receive your hearing aids. However, your hearing will change over time, and it is important to have your hearing re-assessed so that your hearing aids can be recalibrated.
  • Consider other hearing and speech treatments – Along with diagnostic hearing testing, there are a number of other hearing services offered by our doctors of audiology, from custom hearing protection to tinnitus treatment. Depending on what you or your loved one is struggling with, these services can make a positive impact.
  • Support a loved one in getting tested – If you know your loved one has been struggling to hear but is afraid to go on their own, you can be their support. Offer to take them to the appointment and be part of the testing process. With your support, it may be easier for your loved one to get the treatment they need.

If you are concerned about your hearing or need other auditory services, feel free to contact us today to start getting your hearing and speech back on track.
